What is a Tuberous Gesneriad?

A tuberous gesneriad is one which has enlarged, underground stems which resemble the familiar potato (also a tuber). The tubers are storage devices which store nutrients and some moisture during dry seasons. After a spell of dormancy, the plants can regenerate or create new plants from the tubers. The tuberous gesneriads are native to South America. The genus Sinningia accounts for the majority of this type.
